Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of propylene polymers are prepared by dissolving the polymer in a substantially water-immiscible solvent, said solvent or its aqueous azeotrope having a boiling point below that of pure water, adding to the solution less than 20% by weight of an emulsifying agent (e.g. less than 5%) and less than 100% by weight of water, forming an emulsion of the resultant mixture and then removing (e.g. by reduced pressure or by steam distillation) substantially all of said water-immiscible solvent to form an aqueous dispersion of the propylene polymer, which dispersion may be concentrated by distillation or by creaming. The polymer may be polypropylene or a copolymer of propylene with monomers selected from ethylene, butene, isoprene, butadiene, piperylene and divinyl benzene, and may be prepared in the water-immiscible solvent used, e.g. as described in Specifications 821,971, 873,656, 873,657, 873,662, 873,663, 936,132 and 950,067. Preferred immiscible solvents are methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, carbon bisulphide, benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, and paraffinic hydrocarbons. The emulsifying agent may be anionic, cationic or non-ionic and of the many disclosed those exemplified are the potassium and sodium soaps of coconut oil fatty acids and disproportionated rosin acids, dodecylamine glycolate and hydrochloride, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate and lauryl ether, ammonium and potassium oleates, and the sodium and ammonium salts of desoxycholic acid. Optionally a water soluble organic solvent may be present; alcohols, glycols, ethers, ketones and aldehydes being specified. The dispersions may be compounded with curing agents selected from organic peroxides, quinones, sulphur, selenium, tellurium and their compounds, aminoplasts and phenoplasts. The latices find application for coating fibres, textiles, fabrics and paper.
