884,281. Thermo-electric elements; cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. March 17, 1960 [March 17, 1959], No. 9235/59. Classes 36 and 37. A thermocouple cable comprising two conductors insulated by a mineral insulation, e.g. compacted magnesium oxide, is associated with one or more cables of higher tensile strength to form a flexible cable of sufficient strength to support a body whose temperature is being measured. The cables may be bunched and bound together, or wound helically round a central cable. The cables of higher tensile strength may be of stainless steel wire or composed of strands of stainless steel wire or glass fibre. The thermocouple cables may each include a nickel-chrome alloy wire and a nickel-aluminium alloy wire embedded in the mineral insulant and enclosed in a stainless steel tube. The cables may be of equal diameter, or the central cable may be larger than the others. The combined cable may be used in a nuclear reactor, where a fuel can 2 is supported on cable 1, the thermocouple cables 3, 4 being brought off from a point outside ferrule 6, which is welded in bore 10 in can 2, and taken to points where the temperature is to be measured, e.g. in bore 8. Additional cables may be included, serving as metering or control circuit leads.
