[Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] An apparatus for making a mixed batch of a plurality of liquids in predetermined quantities by volume comprises containers 1a, 1b, &c. for the liquids each communicating by means of a valve as at v with a metering cylinder 2 the piston 3 of which has its rod 8 in common with that of a fluid-pressure cylinder 7. Operation of the starter switch of an electrical control panel c activates an electromagnet ve, opening valve v and closing contacts vs, energizing electromagnet 4a which operates valve 4 to admit pressure fluid to the upper side 6 of the piston in the cylinder 7, which moves the rod 8 downward and draws liquid into the metering cylinder 2. Movement of the piston rod actuates through the rack and pinion 9, 10, the potentiometer P which forms one arm of a bridge, another arm of which is formed by pre-set adjustable or fixed resistances corresponding to the volumes required of the several liquids. As the potentiometer balances each pre-set resistance in turn the control circuit, see Figs 2 and 3 (not shown) switches in the next resistance and opens the valve v corresponding to the appropriate liquid. When the total quantity of liquids has been collected, pressure fluid is admitted to the opposite side 11 of the driving piston and the mixed liquid is discharged through the valve 12 into the container 13. The motion in the discharge direction is faster than that in the collecting direction, which is retarded by the flow control valve 5. The control system stops the cycle if the quantity drawn into the metering cylinder 2 is outside pre-determined tolerances, or if there is lack of liquid in a reservoir or if due to mechanical breakdown or other cause the apparatus stands on any metering position for longer than a pre-determined time interval, and operates visual and audible alarm signals. If the start switch be locked in the operated position, metering and discharge cycles will be automatically repeated. The fluid pressure motor 7 may be replaced by a reversible electromotor.
