Abstract

In the dyeing or printing of textile fabrics of cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol fibres with an organic dyestuff containing at least one solubilising group and at least one substituent capable of reacting with the fibre, tone-in-tone effects are obtained by preprinting the fabric locally with a paste containing an oxyaryl compound containing a sulphonic acid group and capable of reacting with the dyestuff. Specified oxyaryl compounds are sulphonated condensation products of formaldehyde with phenol, a cresol, p - tertiary - amyl - phenol, p - octyl - phenol or p-dodecyl-phenol. Suitable reactive dyestuffs are of the stilbene, azine, dioxazine, phthalocyanine, anthraquinone and metal-free or metalliferous azo series and contain, as reactive groups, vinylsulphone, acrylylamino, aliphatically bound phosphoric or sulphuric acid ester or aliphatically bound sulphonyloxy groups, or halogen atoms, especially halogen atoms present in an aliphatic acyl radical or bound to a heterocyclic ring such as a pyrimidine, phthalazine or triazine ring. The dyestuff paste or padding liquor may contain an acid-binding agent or a substance liberating such an agent on heating, or alternatively, the dyed fabric may subsequently be treated with a solution of an acid-binding agent, and in either case, the fabric is subsequently heated or steamed. The paste may also contain urea and a thickener, e.g. methyl cellulose, starch or an alginate. The dyestuff padding liquor also preferably contains a neutral inorganic salt. The dyeings or prints are finally soaped, and may be after-metallised if dyestuffs containing metallisable groups are employed. Examples describe the printing of cotton fabric.
