An apparatus in which articles are packed in a first machine and are then transferred to a second machine wherein an outer wrapping is applied, comprises conveyer 16 between the machines, and a detector finger 24 contacting the packages on the conveyer 16 and movable, if a gap occurs in the normal succession of packages, to cause a switch 26 to open and break a circuit to a normally closed magnetic clutch 30 that couples the wrapping machine to the packing machine, so that the absence of a package from the conveyer 16 causes the wrapping machine to stop. As shown, cigarettes in a hopper 3 pass through outlets 4 to two parallel channels 6 wherein pusher members carry the cigarettes through wrapping means 7 enclosing the cigarettes in metal foil. A second conveyer 8 has pockets that receive slides S and each slide receives a foil wrapped package from each of the channels 6. A transverse conveyer 10 moves the filled slides in to shells 11 and the resulting packages are then carried along a bed 12, past a revenue stamping device 13, to an intermittently driven wheel 14 having radial pockets that receive the packages and carry them round to the conveyer 16 on to which they are ejected by a pusher 15. At the end of the conveyer 16, a pusher 17 moves each package to the wrapping machine 22 in which they pass through various devices 23 which feed and fold a wrapper around each package. The wrapped packages may be finally turned up on edge. The wrapping machine can be driven independently by a motor 31 if it is desired that the wrapping machine shall function even though the clutch 30 is open.
