Abstract

Soap and detergent compositions contain as whitening agent a pyrazoline derivative of formula <FORM:0883826/III/1> in which R is a C1-4 alkyl group (including monohydroxyalkyl) or a phenyl group, and Ar is a phenyl group substituted by one chlorine or bromine atom in the para position by two such atoms of which one is in the para position. The compositions may contain 0,001-1% by weight of the whitening agent; which may be added to a detergent slurry as a solution in ethanol or other solvent, and the slurry spray-dried. According to the Provisional Specification, the phenyl radical Ar may be substituted by 1-3 halogen atoms in any positions, and the -COOR group may be attached to any position of the N-phenyl radical. The compounds may be applied to textiles from a dispersion in a suitable liquid such as water, e.g. from aqueous detergent solutions containing a soap or a synthetic organic detergent. The liquid may contain other textile-treating agents. According to the Provisional Specification, the phenyl radical Ar may be substituted by 1-3 halogen atoms in any positions, and the -COOR group may be attached to any position of the N-phenyl radical.
