Abstract
Phenol derived from cumene hydroperoxide is purified by contacting the phenol, containing colour-forming impurities, including benzofuran precursors, in the liquid phase with a sufficient quantity of a base to adjust the pH of the mixture to a value not less than 6.0 at an elevated temperature for at least 15 minutes to effect conversion of the benzofuran precursors into products separable from the phenol, fractionally steamdistilling the phenol before, during, or after treatment with the base to remove benzofurans and subjecting the phenol to fractional distillation to recover a purified phenol. The process is described in examples, the bases used being sodium and potassium hydroxides, octadecylamine and octadecylamine acetate, propylenediamine disalicylate and ammonia.
