Abstract
883,702. Stretching thermoplastic sheets. SWEDLOW Inc. Oct. 5, 1959, No. 33715/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XIII] To improve the physical (including optical) properties of a sheet of thermoplastic resin, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate, it is gripped at its edges and cooled at the points where it is gripped, whilst the rest of the sheet is heated and stretched. A sheet 24 is perforated at its edges and gripped by spring clips 51 which surround tubes 47 passing through the perforations. Each clip has flanges 50, 52 extending on each side of the sheet. The sheet suspended from a frame 30 is run into an oven where it is heated by hot air, whilst the parts where it is gripped are cooled by circulating cooling fluid through the pipes 47. Alternatively, it may be heated by infra-red heaters or in a fluid bath of oil or glycerine. After heating, the sheet is removed from the frame 30, and is secured by pins 102, Fig. 9, to cables 90 which are pulled by hydraulically operated pistons to stretch the sheet. The sheet may be heated during stretching by a hot air oven. In a modification, the sheet may be gripped by eccentric clamps with serrated edges. The sheet may be moulded by hot dies, blowing or suction whilst still hot. To compensate for the shrinkage due to cooling, the stretching force may be reduced slightly. The Specification includes several examples, giving the temperatures, and duration of and percentage stretch.
