Abstract
883,421. Optical projection apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957], No. 17202/61. Divided out of 883,419. Class 97(1). An optical apparatus comprises means for supporting in a fixed plane an element bearing a plurality of rows of images, means for mounting said supporting means to permit movement of the element in directions normal to each other in said plane with respect to an optical station, means operatively connected to said supporting means for moving said element in one of said directions and for resolving movement of said element in the other direction into an oblique movement in said plane, means operatively connected to said supporting means for reciprocating said element in the other of said directions, and drive means interconnecting both of said moving means for simultaneous operation thereof, whereby the resultant movement of the element is the vector sum of the movement in said one direction and said oblique movement. The apparatus is described as applied to the optical viewing apparatus of Specification 883,419 for the successive viewing of a series of images on an image bearing element at a viewing station, Fig. 16, which comprises a glass platen 135 accommodated in the holder 133 communicating with a vacuum pump so that when an element on a perforated plate is pressed against the platen 135, the vacuum on the plate is released and the element is retained against the platen 135 by suction. The holder 133 of the glass platen 135 is mounted on a C-shaped member which is slidable on guides 132, Fig. 11, these guides being carried by a block 153, slidable on orthogonal guides 134, separated by plates 149 and 148. The C- shaped member is movable in the direction of guides 132 by a rack and helical pinion 156, which is clutched at 164 and 173 to an external knob 31, which also rotates a gear 170. This gear rotates a shaft 176 carrying a cam 178 engaged by a follower 181 connected at 180 to the block 153 is reciprocable along the guides 131. Thus, by rotating the knob 31 the element carried by the platen 135 has a compound movement such as to introduce each image into the light path. By axially moving the knob 31 the clutch 164, 173 is disengaged but the helical pinion can still be rotated by a pin and slot connection with the knob, and shaft 176 is uncoupled from the gear 170, so that this shaft can be reciprocated independently of the rotation of the knob 31. Specification 883,420 also is referred to.
