Class 141 In a garment having an opening fitted with an elastic band, the band comprises a narrow rubber strip 12 loosely disposed in the hemmed edge of the garment material or in a separate sheath 11 and retained by lines of stitching 13, 14 which do not penetrate the rubber strip. The width of the rubber strip is not greater than one-quarter of the width of the hemmed edge or sheath. The stitching 13, 14 may be separate lines of chain stitching or a row of cover stitching as shown. The garment material and sheath may be made of non-stretchable material or of knit material stretchable in the circumferential direction.
