Abstract
882,886. Storing gases. GENERAL FOODS CORPORATION. March 28, 1960, No. 10837/60. Class 8(2). Storage at atmospheric pressure of a hydrateforming gas such as carbon dioxide is effected by contacting the gas with an aqueous liquid e.g., water under a pressure at least equal to the hydrate-forming pressure e.g., 200 p.s.i. and within the freezing temperature range of the solution so formed and for a sufficient time that the solution so formed freezes. The block of ice so formed is said to hold 120 c.c.s. of carbon dioxide per gram which volume is released on melting the ice e.g., on adding it to warm water. Other suitable gases include carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, hydrogen sulphide, methyl chloride, helium, orgon krypton and neon. The ice block should preferably be stabilised by being maintained at -10‹C. for 24 hours.
