Abstract

A method of heat treating a structural part comprises locally heating a selected region of the part and modifying the surface configuration to indicate the centre of such region and the extent of the heating. The heating may be by arc welding, resistance welding, induction heating, or gas welding and the surface modification may comprise a stud welded thereto or a dimple formed therein, the shape of the stud or dimple indicating the amount of heat applied and the location indicating the centre of the region. A stud of the kind described in Specification 804,804 may be used and a narrow annular groove machined round the weld.
