Abstract

882,670. Nuclear fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. June 22, 1960 [June 25, 1959], No. 21789/59. Class 39(4) A nuclear reactor fuel element comprises an open-ended sleeve, fuel rods lying within the sleeve transversely to the axis of the sleeve and to the flow of coolant, and supporting means for the rods mounted on the sleeve. As shown, fuel rods 20 are supported at their ends in beryllium plates 7, 8 which fit removably in grooves inside the graphite sleeve 2. The plates 7, 8 are supported on tie rods 9 which pass through the plates and enter the sleeve walls, being held in position by set screws 12. The fuel rods may comprise pellets of uranium dioxide in beryllium tubes closed by beryllium studs with the interposition of alumina pellets. H-shaped beryllium plates 5 are attached at each end of two of the sleeve walls and carry studs 31 which are joined to the studs on an adjacent fuel element by loosely-fitting links 30. A projection 45 at the upper end of the element fits into a recess 46 in the adjoining element. A string of elements is located in a vertical coolant channel in a reactor core and coolant passes both inside and outside the sleeves 2. The elements may also be used in horizontal fuel channels. Instead of uranium dioxide, the fuel may be uranium dioxide mixed with plutonium dioxide or thorium dioxide, or a mixture of plutonium dioxide and thorium dioxide. The Provisional Specification refers also to coupling means consisting of lugs on a lower element engaging with shoulders on an upper element.
