Abstract

882,221. Forming bag tubes. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. Sept. 2, 1960 [June 3, 1959], No. 19009/59. Class 94(2). Relates to tube-forming apparatus wherein a web of paper is folded about a former plate to form a tube and is forwarded to a cut-off position and comprises a nip-bar assembly comprising upper and lower rollers 22, 23 with nip-bars or lands 26, 27 extending substantially the full lengths of the rollers and for peripheral distances less than their circumference, the vertical plane through the axis of the upper roller being in advance of a similar plane through the axis of the lower roller. In the embodiment shown the lands 26, 27 subtend angles of approximately 60 degrees and the angle 29 between a line 24 through the axes of the rollers and a vertical line 25 through the axis of the lower roller is approximately 5 degrees. A beater bar 20 rotates so that it moves upwards from below the paper tube in a path 21 slightly in advance of the forward edge 17 of the former plate 11 and forces the lower ply 13 against that edge and the upper ply 12 against the edge 19 of a breaker plate 18, both edges being serrated. The tube is then cut with the edges of the plies one in advance of the other, which facilitates the sealing of the end of the tube to form a bag. The speed of rotation of the nip rollers 22, 23 is less than that of rollers 14, 15 which draw the tube over the former plate and then, when the lands 26, 27 nip the tube between them just before the beater bar 20 makes contact with it, a slack portion 28 is formed in the tube and this facilitates the action of the beater bar in forcing it against the serrated edges 17, 19
