Abstract
1,225,594. Folding sheets. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. 7 Oct., 1969, No. 49239/69. Heading B8R. Apparatus for the zig-zag folding of a sequence of overlapping sheets (Figs. 1 to 4, not shown) comprises an upper folding roll 20 provided with tuckers 18, 16 and grippers 21, 22 each of which includes an anvil 26 and a pivoted finger 27. The anvil 26 precedes the finger 27 in the direction of rotation of the roll 20, and the tip of each tucker is positioned further from the axis of the roll 20 than the tip of each gripper to develop a greater lineal speed in each tucker tip than in each gripper tip. The upper folding roll 20 co-operates with a similar lower roll 25 in known manner to fold sheet material which is fed to the rolls at a lineal speed greater than the surface speed of the rolls so that slack sheet material accumulates in front of the rolls; to permit slack to be taken from the accumulation both during tucking and final closing of the gripper portions, at least one of the rolls (both, as shown) is provided with a relief 33 trailing each gripper; this relief may alternatively trail each tucker, or may trail both the tuckers and grippers. The apparatus for delivering a sequence of overlapped sheets to the folding rollers is described with reference to Fig. 9 (not shown), and includes a cut-off roll (45) and a bed-roll (43) which feeds sheets cut from a web on to a retard roll (48); the roll (48) travels slower than the roll (43) so that each succeeding sheet laps the previous one and these overlapped sheets are fed by a slitter bed-roll (55) and a score slitter (56) to the folding rolls.
