Abstract

620,277. Bag making. ROSE, A. G., GILBERT, J. A., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Jan. 14, 1947, No. 1301. [Class 94(ii)] In a bag-making machine wherein a web 11 of paper, film or foil is made into ia tube around a former 12 the tube is cut up into bag lengths, and one end turned up and sealed, while the tube is still mounted on the former. The Figure shows a machine using heat-sealing for the tubular seam and the bag bottom turn-up. The web 11, of heat-sealing material, is formed into a tube around the former 12, using rollers 13 and a guide 16, the tubular seam is sealed by a heated roll 17, which is pressed against the tube only while the latter moves downwards when pulled off: the former by grippers 42. Heated sealing members 22, 23 reciprocate in slides 27, 28, nip and seal the end of the tube between them and the tube is severed by a pair of knives 31, 32. The member 23 then retracts but the member 22 moves further forward to carry a folding recess 33 into alignment with the end of the former 12, such action causing the sealed portion of the tube to bend over to the right. The member 22 then pivots upwards about the axis of a shaft 34 to fold upwards the bag end which is sealed to the bag by a heated member 37, the end of the former being supported by a member 41. The end of the former is cut away to allow the grippers 42 to seize the tube end to draw it off the former downwards a distance equal to one bag length. The bags are held by members 43, mounted on a continuous chain 44 and led to a filling and sealing device.
