Abstract

Inorganic substances in powdered or laminate form are coloured by applying an anionic dyestuff or a pigment and also applying, prior to or together with the dyestuff or pigment, a monomeric aminoalkylalkoxysilane, an aminoalkylpolysiloxane, a copolymer or simple blend of an aminoalkylpolysiloxane with one or more other siloxanes, or a metal co-ordination complex, e.g., a copper, chromium or cobalt complex, of the silane or polysiloxane. The process is applicable to the colouring of silica, silica gel, quartz, diatomaceous earth, siliceous sand, mica, titanium dioxide, aluminium silicate, alumina and calcium carbonate and is exemplified in Example VIII. The silane or polysiloxane may be applied from aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion in the presence of distributers, such as alcohols, organic and inorganic acids, aromatic hydrocarbons and alkalies, examples of which are given. Lists of suitable silanes and polysiloxanes are given. Numerous suitable dyestuffs and organic and inorganic pigments are also specified. Specifications 795,894 and 882,062 are referred to.ALSO:A colouring composition for application to various substrates (see Groups III, IV(c), V and XV) comprises an anionic dyestuff or a pigment together with an aminoalkylpolysiloxane, or a copolymer or simple blend of an aminoalkylpolysiloxane with one or more other siloxanes, or a metal co-ordination complex, e.g. a copper, chromium or cobalt complex, of the polysiloxane. Lists of suitable polysiloxanes are given. The composition may be applied from aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion, in the presence of distributors such as alcohols, organic and inorganic acids, aromatic hydrocarbons and alkalies, examples of which are given. Numerous suitable dyestuffs and organic and inorganic pigments are also specified. Specifications 795,894 and 882,062 are referred to.ALSO:Organic or inorganic fibrous materials are coloured by applying an anionic dyestuff or a pigment and also applying, prior to or simultaneously with the dyestuff or pigment, a monomeric aminoalkylalkoxysilane, an aminoalkylpolysiloxane, a copolymer or simple blend of an aminoalkylpolysiloxane with one or more other siloxanes, or a metal coordination complex, e.g., a copper, chromium or cobalt complex, of the silane or polysiloxane. The process may be applied to printing, in which case the dyestuff or pigment and the silane or polysiloxane are applied together. The process is applicable to the colouring of fibres of wool, silk, cotton, hemp, jute, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, regenerated protein, glass, asbestos, aluminium silicate, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl compounds, polyesters, polyethylene and blends thereof, and also leather. The silane or polysiloxane may be applied from aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion, in the presence of distributors, such as alcohols, organic and inorganic acids, aromatic hydrocarbons and alkalies, examples of which are given, and when applied as a pretreatment, the so-treated fibres are preferably dried and heated prior to the application of the colour. Lists of suitable silanes and polysiloxanes are given. Specified anionic dyestuffs are direct and developed, reactive, acid, premetallised, neutral, naphthol, vat, vat ester, vat acid and sulphur dyes. Organic and inorganic pigments may be employed, and many are specified. The synthetic pigment obtained by applying an anionic dyestuff together with the above silanes or polysiloxanes to a powdered oxide such as silica, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide may also be employed. Elastomeric polymers such as acrylic polymers, textile softeners and polysiloxane oils may be applied together with the pigment and/or the silane or polysiloxane or may be applied as an after-treatment to the coloured fibres to provide a textile finish. Improved results are obtained by washing, pulling or stretching the coloured fibres. Examples describe the dyeing or printing of glass fibres and the dyeing of asbestos, cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile, polyester and polyethylene fibres and the dyeing of leather. Specifications 795,894 and 882,062 are referred to.ALSO:Gravel is coloured by applying an anionic dyestuff or a pigment and also applying, prior to or together with the pigment or dyestuff, a monomeric aminoalkylalkoxy-silane, an aminoalkylpolysiloxane, a copolymer or simple blend of an aminoalkylpolysiloxane with one or more other siloxanes, or a metal coordination complex, e.g., a copper, chromium or cobalt complex, of the silane or polysiloxane. The silane or polysiloxane may be applied from aqueous solution, dispersion or emulsion in the presence of distributers such as alcohols, organic or inorganic acids, aromatic hydrocarbons or alkalies. Lists of suitable silanes, polysiloxanes, dyestuffs and pigments are given. Specifications 795,894 and 882,062 are referred to.
