Abstract

Substituted ammonium silicon compounds containing the grouping <FORM:0882053/III/1> where R is alkyl, aralkyl or nitro-, athoxy- or halo-aralkyl, X is halogen, a is at least 3, s is 1 to 3, t is 0 to 2 and s + t is 3, are useful as anti-foam agents. In Example 4, the compound CH3(I)NH2(CH2)3Si(OC2H5)3\t is used as such in an aqueous solution of tri-sodium phosphate. Specifications 882,054, 882,062, 882,069 and 882,096 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 684,296, 769,498 and 795,894.ALSO:Polysubstituted ammonium silicon compounds containing the grouping <FORM:0882053/IV (a)/1> where R is alkyl, aralkyl, or nitro-, alkoxy- or halo-aralkyl, X is halogen, a is at least 3, s is 1 to 3, t is 0 to 2 and s+t is 3, are prepared by reacting a halide RX with an aminoalkyl silicon compound having the grouping H2N(CH2)aSi­. Th compounds which are claimed have the above formula where the remaining silicon valencies are satisfied by alkoxy radicals with or without alkyl or aryl radicals; but polysiloxanes are included. The polysiloxanes may also be prepared by hydrolyzing the ammonium silanes. The starting silicon materials are described in Specifications 882,054, 882,062, 882,069 and 882,096. Suitable halides are methyl, ethyl, propyl and benzyl chlorides, methyl and p-chlorophenethyl iodides, and ethyl, butyl and anisyl bromides. The yield of tri- and tetrasubstituted ammonium salts is increased if the hydrogen halide by-product is removed as it is formed, e.g. by reacting under reduced pressure. Temperatures of -5 DEG to 150 DEG C. are specified, and organic solvents may be present, e.g. alcohols, ethers and hydrocarbons, some of which appear to influence the degree of substitution on the nitrogen atom. The examples describe the preparation of (1) <FORM:0882053/IV (a)/2> , (2) <FORM:0882053/IV (a)/3> and (3) <FORM:0882053/IV (a)/4> , and (4) the use of (1) as an anti-foam agent. The Specification also refers to the reaction of gamma-aminopropyl polysiloxane or the cyclic tetramer of delta-aminobutylmethylsiloxane with an alkyl or aralkyl halide. The compounds are also useful as sizes for fibrous glass surfaces and as modifiers for silicone oils, greases, rubber and thermosetting resins. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 684,296, 769,498 and 795,894.
