Abstract
881,773. Finishing yarns. SCRAGG & SONS Ltd., ERNEST. Feb. 16, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 6656/59. Class 120(3) [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for heat treating a running yarn of thermoplastic material, e.g. during stretching or shrinking or to set twist therein during crimping, comprises a cylinder rotated through bearings on a fixed shaft by an external geared drive and heated around its periphery (on which the yarn runs) by a stationary heating element mounted near the cylinder. In a drum-type heater shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a fixed shaft 1 carries two discs 4 of heat insulating material which support an electrical heating element 5 the supply, via leads 6, to which may be regulated to maintain the heater at a predetermined temperature. A drum 10 consisting of pieces 7 and 8 of heat insulating material and a yarn channel member 9 of heat conducting material, e.g. copper, brass or mild steel, is rotated on bearings 13 through gear teeth 12 on a boss 11. A cover 25 of heat insulating material embraces drum 10 and a spacer 22 around which the yarn entering and leaving via a slot 21 is wound and led sequentially in channels of member 9. Cover 10 is in two halves pivoted on a pin 14 and normally held together by a spring 16 and located by lugs 17, 18, which engage a fixed pin 20. In a crimping process, Fig. 3, yarn withdrawn from a bobbin 30 through a tensioner 31 by rollers 32, 33, and spacer 34, passes through a heater 35 (constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2) and a false-twist tube 36 and is forwarded by a device 37 to be wound on a take-up package 38. The peripheral speeds of drum 35 and device 37 are slightly less than that of roller 32 but slightly greater than that of wind-up roller 40. Specifications 464,981 and 536,177 are referred to.
