Abstract

881,694. Blasting charges; explosive compositions; blasting. DOW CHEMICAL CO. July 19, 1960, No. 25178/60. Classes 9(1), 9(2) and 68(1). Blasting charge, which is pumped into a borehole or well before being detonated, comprises a solution of ammonium nitrate in liquid ammonia. Mixtures of ammonium nitrate and anhydrous ammonia may be used in which the ammonium nitrate present exceeds the amount which can dissolve in the ammonia. A fluid may be pumped into the borehole after the explosive mixture to drive it forwards. In an example 78% ammonium nitrate (by weight) and 22% anhydrous liquid ammonia was fired by a shaped charge. The viscosity of the explosive may be increased by adding nitro-cellulose, cellulose-acetate, or nitrostarch.
