Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated compounds of formula <FORM:0881576/IV (a)/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrogen, hydrocarbon radicals, polar atoms or groups (e.g. halogens, ester groups, ether groups, halogen-substituted hydrocarbon radicals) such that at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 is polar atom or group are polymerized alone, or with other copolymerizable monomers, using as catalyst an organo-boric compound selected from monoalkyl boric acids and anhydrides. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl, ethyl and butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile. Specified boron compounds are the isopropyl, isobutyl, t-butyl, isoamyl and t-amyl boric acids and their trimetic anhydrides (trialkyl triboron trioxanes) of formula R3B3O3. Th polymerization may take place in bulk, solution, emulsion or dispersion and small quantities (e.g. 0,001 to 0,01%) of oxygen may also be present.
