Abstract
881,262. Making universal joints; assembling force fits. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 10, 1958], No. 35945/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of attaching a coupling member to a torque-transmitting tubular shaft comprises surrounding the end of the tubular shaft with a circular collar of greater wall thickness than that of the shaft and forcing a spigot portion of the coupling member into the surrounded end of the tubular shaft by means of a force fit whereby the coupling member, tubular shaft and collar are firmly held together, the tubular shaft and/or spigot portion being initially so formed that relief is provided between them and/or between the tubular shaft and the collar. In one embodiment the coupling member 1 is a yoke member of a universal joint and is made of pearlitic malleable cast iron. The tubular shaft is of mild steel, aluminium or titanium or alloys thereof and is provided with flutes 3. The mild steel collar 4 has a wall thickness three times greater than the tubular shaft and is longer than the spigot portion 5 of the yoke member 1 which has an interference fit in the tubular shaft of approximately 0.015 inch and is of three lobed shape in cross-section. The lobes fit between the flutes in the shaft. A stationary guard 7 mounted on a ball-bearing may be provided for the shaft and universal joint as shown in Fig. 3. In another embodiment the spigot portion 17 of the yoke member 1 is of circular cross-section and is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed arcuate recesses 18 (Fig. 6).
