Abstract
The invention comprises dyestuffs containing as at least one chromophone a 3 : 8-pyrene-quinone residue and also containing at least one acid group imparting solubility in water and at least one residue selected from halo-1 : 3 : 5-triazinylamino, halo-diazinylamino and halopropionylamino residues, which residue is connected via the amino group to the dyestuff molecule. Halo-substituted amino residues mentioned b -chloropropionyl-amino, dichloropropionyl-amino, chloro-1 : 3-diazinylamino or a residue of the formula <FORM:0880795/IV (c)/1> where n is a number not greater than 4, and Z is chlorine, a substituted hydroxyl or mercapto group or an amino group which may be substituted including an amino-azo dye residue. The dyestuffs are made by reacting a 3 : 8-pyrenequinone containing at least one acylatable amino group with a di- or tri-halo-1 : 3 : 5-triazine, a dihalo-diazine or a halo-propionyl halide so that at least one halogen atom of the halo compounds is present in the final product, at least one of the starting materials containing an acid, water-solubilising group. The dyestuffs having one halogen atom attached to the triazine ring may also be made by reacting an appropriate dihalotriazinylamino dyestuff with ammonia, an amine or hydroxy or mercapto compound. Examples are given in some of which the pyrenequinone residue forms part of a carbazole ring. The dyestuffs dye and print wool and polyhydroxylated fibrous materials in conjunction with an alkaline treatment, 7-Anilino-2-(41 aminoanilino)-5 : 10-dichloropyrene-3 : 8-quinone, made by condensing 7-anilino-2 : 5 : 10-trichloropyrene-3 : 8-quinone with 1 : 4-diamino-benzene, is sulphonated and probably simultaneously carbazolised, by treatment with oleum. 7-(21 : 61-Dimethylanilino)-2 : 5 : 10-trichloropyrene-3 : 8-quinone, made by condensing 2 : 5 : 7 : 10-tetrachloropyrene-3 : 8-quinone with 2 : 6-dimethylaniline, is condensed with p-aminoacet-anilide and the product is sulphonated, and possibly carbazolised, by treatment with oleum.
