Abstract

880,605. Measuring temperature electrically. GAS COUNCIL. Nov. 9, 1959 [Nov. 8, 1958], No. 35934/58. Class 40 (1). A suction pyrometer comprises a thermosensitive electrical element located in the bore of a tube through which gas from the body of gas whose temperature is to be measured is rapidly drawn and in which a shield surface surrounding and receiving radiation directly from the thermo-sensitive element is cooled to a substantially constant temperature. The thermo-sensitive element may be a resistor, but is preferably a sheathed thermo-couple 10 having its hot junction 11 embedded in a triangular spider 12 which locates the thermocouple coaxially with respect to a shield tube 4 having a cylindrical choke 13 at its inlet end to increase the velocity of the gas which passes to an outlet port 8. Leads 17 connect the thermo-couple to a plug and socket connector 18. Water inlet and outlet ports 29 and 30 communicate with a jacket formed by tubes 20 and 25 held in position with respect to the shield tube 4 by an annular spacer 21 and radial locating pins 28 respectively. Connection of auxiliary equipment including water and gas pumps and a temperature-indicating instrument to the pyrometer is described together with a test rig for calibrating the pyrometer by comparison with a true gas temperature standard pyrometer (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
