Abstract

880,486. Diaphragm pumps; raising liquids. HEDLEY & CO. Ltd., THOMAS. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 11, 1957], No. 39890/58. Classes 102(1) and 102(2). A liquid applicator comprises an apertured transverse wall 21, extending across the opening of a liquid container, and a diaphragm member 25, provided with slit like openings 26, forming a variable volume space 30 which is greater in volume than the bore of a dip tube 24 extending from the aperture to the bottom of the container. On fixing the applicator to the container the air in the container is compressed and liquid is forced in the space 30 where there will be a bubble of air 35. The member 25 is applied to the surface to receive the liquid and is rubbed over this surface causing the diaphragm to be depressed or released and the apertures to be covered or uncovered. Thus liquid is continually forced through the openings and air also flows through the openings into the reservoir and is forced through the dip tube 24 causing an increase in pressure in the space 34 of the container which forces further liquid in to the reservoir. The diaphragm may be received in a circular slot 28 (as shown) or the applicator may be moulded as a single piece which receives the transverse wall The diaphragm is preferably provided with ribs so that it readily expands to its natural shape.
