Abstract
880,469. Making filters. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS Inc. March 18, 1960 [April 17, 1959], No. 9728/60. Class 46. [Also in Group XXII] A perforate centre tube 12, Fig. 4, with reduced ends 23 has its upper end inserted in a recess 14 in an upper end cap 16 and then mechanically joined thereto by the forcing over of a lip 24 by a drift punch or cylindrical forming tool 27. A self supporting helical ribbon filler element 13 with the turns fused together is then mounted on the centre tube, and a longitudinally-pleated wire cloth cylindrical filter 11 is placed around element 13 and its upper end inserted into a slot 15 in end cap 16. A bottom cap 17 is then mounted on the lower end of the assembly and lower lip 24 is forced over. Finally lips 25 of the end caps are forced against the ends of cylinder 11 by rollers such as 29, Fig. 6. Each end of element 11 had previously been increased in internal diameter (tc produce the profile of Fig. 4), by, e.g. a mandrel on the inside and a roller on the outside. Filter element 13 is made e.g. as in Specification 665,149.
