Abstract

880,316. Electromagnetic interaction pumps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 5, 1958 [Feb. 8, 1957], No. 4375/57. Class 35. A polyphase linear interaction pump having a radial travelling field has a return duct 15 running concentrically within the annular pumping duct 13 so that the pumped fluid enters and leaves at the same end of the pump. Liquid enters, by tube 20, a spiral volute 19 surrounding the discharge tube 16, enters the pumping duct 13 through a converging accelerating section 17, and leaves by way of a deflector 14 connecting into a decelerating section 15 leading into the discharge tube 16. The duct assembly is supported by welded brackets 22 on bed plate 21, allowance being made for thermal expansion. The outer annular core structure 24 comprises a series of radial pockets and is supported independently of the pumping duct assembly on pads 23 on the brackets 22. This enables the core to be removed without disturbing the ducts. An inner annular core structure 25 which may comprise lamination pockets or a powder structure completes the radial magnetic circuit. The core structures are in close contact with the duct to provide mechanical support and cooling. The pump may be preheated before use by energizing the core windings 48 at reduced power level. If desired an annular space may be provided between the discharge tube 16 and an extension of the conical section 28 of the accelerator 17. This space may be used to provide access to a gasvent tube 44, and a pre-heater (not shown). The liquid travel may be reversed, and the pump may be used horizontally, in which case, a gas vent may be needed on the volute 19. If desired, the core structures may have separate cooling means. The ducts may be non-circular.
