Abstract

Class 34(2) A method of dehydration of solids carried out in a manner simulating a fluidized bed of the said solids is characterized in that a ring-shaped bed of the said solids is driven around the side walls of a containing vessel through an up and down zig-zag movement of the particles of the said solids, created within the vessels by beaters, which beaters are rapidly revolving at the bottom of the vessel and define by their lower boundary the lower boundary of the bed which is heated at least in part by the mutual friction of the bed particles. In the apparatus shown material is dried "in vacuo" in chambers a1, a2, a3, the necessary heat being derived from frictional contact of the particles as they are whirled around by rotating beater arms b1, b2, b3. The vacuum is maintained in the chambers through connections h, g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> and the material being dried passes from chamber to chamber through valve controlled conduits i1, i2 under the action of the beaters to eventually emerge in a dehydrated state through a valve j3. Fruit, vegetables and meat as well as liquid or semi-liquid milk, coffee extract, fruit pulp, pharmaceuticals and oil shale may be dehydrated in the apparatus. A simulated fluidized bed of solids must exist in the or each vessel before the dehydration according to the invention is commenced. Additional heat may be supplied if necessary through the walls of the or each vessel via a steam heated jacket. The walls of the vessel may alternatively be heated by combustion gases.
