In a gramophone a pick-up stylus is fed into the starting groove of a record by means of a fixed ramp and a releasable locking device for holding the pick-up prior to release whereby after release the pick-up slides on a roller down the ramp against the edge of the record to determine the position thereof and from that position is then lifted above the level of the record and moved inwardly and lowered into the starting groove of a record. The pick-up is held in the inoperative position at the top of the ramp by a vertical shaft 22 which passes through a triangular extension plate 11 on the pick-up 4. When a control member 13 on the shaft 22 is moved downwardly to release the pick-up, a projection thereon almost immediately registers with the edge of the record. Further downward movement of member 13 causes the lower end of shaft 22 to move a lever 15, Fig. 4, to lift the pick-up arm so that the stylus is raised above the record surface by means of a pin 20 and plate 21. When the control member 13 is then rotated to a stop 31 for one particular speed of rotation of the turn-table or to another stop 32 for another speed of rotation, the lever 15 is swung horizontally, Fig. 5, to move the stylus over the starting groove of the record. Releasing control member 13 causes the stylus to be lowered into the starting groove. The control member 13 effects a change of speed by means of a plate 23 on the shaft 22, the rotation of which causes a pin 34 thereon to move a lever 33 carrying friction pulleys 39 coupled by a belt to a motor shaft 36, so that one or other of the pulleys engage the rim of a jockey pulley 42 driving the rim of the turn-table 44.
