Abstract

Alkyl iodides containing 1-5 carbon atoms are prepared by reducing 1 mole of elemental iodine in an aqueous slurry containing 2-2.6 equivalents of a reducing agent free from bisulphite ions to yield 2 moles of hydriodic acid, and reacting each mole of the latter with 1-1.2 moles of a dialkyl sulphate (the alkyl containing 1-5 carbon atoms) at a pH of 1-5.3 and a temperature of 70-95 DEG C. Specified reducing agents are metals, such as Li, Na, K, Fe, Ni, Zn, Al, Cr, Cd, Co, Sn, Ca, Ba and Sr; non-metals such as Si; salts or oxides of metastable valencies of metals, such as stannous sulphate, antimonous sulphate, sodium meta-antimonite, sodium arsenite, antimony trioxide, arsenic trioxide and vanadium tetroxide; organic acids, such as oxalic, formic, thioacetic and pyruvic and alkali and alkaline earth metal salts thereof; inorganic acids, such as hydrosulphuric, hypophosphorus and phosphorus and alkali and alkaline earth metal salts thereof; organic bases, such as hydrazine, phenylhydrazine and hydroxylamine; other organic reducing agents, such as aldose sugars, xyloses, aldehydes and oximes; and miscellaneous reducing agents, such as nitrides and azides Specified dialkyl sulphates are dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl and diamyl sulphate. Specification 851,683 is referred to.ALSO:Hydriodic acid is prepared by the reduction of 1 mole of elemental iodine in an aqueous slurry containing 2-2.6 equivalents of a reducing agent free from bisulphite ions.
