Abstract

The invention comprises the chromium and cobalt complexes of monoazo dyestuffs of formula:- <FORM:0878527/IV(c)/1> wherein the benzene ring A may be further substituted, E is the residue of an azo component which couples in an ortho position to a hydroxy group or adjacent to an enolizable keto group, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group with not more than 4 carbon atoms, X is a chlorine or bromine atom and m is 1 or 2. The dyes are prepared by reacting an aminoazo compound of formula:- <FORM:0878527/IV(c)/2> with cyanuric chloride or bromide and with an agent yielding chromium or cobalt. The dye is preferably metallized before reaction with the cyanuric halide. The aminoazo dyestuffs are prepared in the usual way from diazotized anthranilic acids coupled with components such as aminophenols, 1-aminophenyl- 5-pyrazolones and their sulphonic acids and, preferably, aminonaphthol sulphonic acids. Specified substituents in A are nitro, chloro, bromo, acetylamino, methoxy, benzoyl, trifluoromethyl, sulphonamide, sulphone and carboxy. The dyes give yellow, red, purple and brown shades on cellulose materials when applied in conjunction with an acid-binding agent. Many examples of the dyes and their preparation are specified. Specifications 797,946, 838,337 and 842,933 are referred to.
