Abstract
878,472. Vertical take-off aircraft. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Jan 1, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1959], No. 728/59. Class 4. A vertical take-off aircraft has at least one lifting engine, which is mounted to discharge propulsive gases downwardly, and at least one gas deflector member mounted below the engine and maintainable in a position in which it serves to deflect the propulsive gases away from the vertical so as to produce a forward or rearward component of thrust on the aircraft, means being provided for hindering gas flow transversely of the aircraft whilst the gases are being deflected by the gas deflector member. Pivotally mounted flap members 13 deflect air into the intakes of engines 11, mounted in bay 12, to assist their starting. The pivotally mounted deflector members 14 have longitudinally extending webs 16 to hinder the cross-flow of propulsive gases. When the.deflector members 13 and 14 are in the closed position, they seal against each other and the adjacent aircraft surfaces. In an alternative construction, Fig. 6 (not shown), the deflector members have spaced side walls between which extend two curved parallel deflectors.
