Abstract

Polyepoxides having an epoxy equivalency greater than 1,0 are cured with organic polyamines containing at least 2 primary amino groups each of which is linked through a carbon chain to a common carbocyclic ring system, the number of carbon atoms in each of the carbon chains and carbocyclic ring system taken together being at least 14. Two main types of amine are disclosed: (1) those obtained by replacing the carboxyl groups of polymerized unsaturated fatty acids by an -NH2 or -CH2NH2 group, and (2) those obtained by replacing the carboxyl groups in an addition product of at least 2 mols of an unsaturated fatty acid with 1 mol of an aromatic compound by an -NH2 or -CH2, NH2 group. The replacement may take place by Hofmann degradation of the amides or by conversion into the nitriles and subsequent hydrogenation (see Group IV(b)). Unsaturated fatty acids specified are oleic, linoleic, linolenic and recinernic (8,11-octadecadienoic); and aromatic compounds specified are benzene, anisole, xylene, diphenyl and naphthalene. Epoxy compounds specified are glycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol, catechol, and bisphenol A; and a large number of di-glycidyl amines, of which diglycidyl aniline is used in Example (3) and a mixture of 1,1,1-trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether and N,N1-diaethyl-N,N1-di-2,3-epoxypropyl-4, 41-diaminodiphenyl methane is used in Example (4). Triethylene tetramine is used as hardener in comparative examples; and butanol/toluene is used as a solvent. Specifications 518,057, 679,536, 680,997, 717,291, 730,670, 739,701, 772,830 and 816,923 are referred to.ALSO:In Examples (1) dimerized linoleic acid and (4) xylyl-bis-stearic acid (principally 1,3-dimethyl-4,6-[di-9-stearic acid]-benzene, prepared from 2 mols of oleic acid and 1 mol of an isomeric mixture of xylenes) are first converted to nitriles by treatment with ammonia in the presence of cobalt acetate hydrate; the nitriles are subsequently hydrogenated to form diamines by treatment (1) in methanol and liquid ammonia in the presence of Raney cobalt and (4) in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of Raney cobalt and ammonia. Specifications 518,057, 679,536, 680,997, 717,291, 730,670, 739,701, 772,830 and 816,923 are referred to.
