Abstract
A polymerizable composition comprises divinyl benzene dioxide and an amine which has at least 2 active amino hydrogen atoms attached to the same or different nitrogen atoms. The unpolymerized or partially polymerized compositions, alone or in a solvent, are stable for long periods before being finally cured. Specified amines are primary alkyl, aryl, aralkal, alkaryl and cycloaliphatic amines, including polyamines; polyamides; amino-alcohols and -phenols; addition products of polyamines and epoxides; and heterocyclic amines. Many examples of such compounds are given. Hard resins are obtained when 0,3 to 3 amino hydrogen atoms are provided for each epoxy group of the diepoxide. When the proportion is 1 to 3 hydrogen atoms per epoxy group, resins having potential use as anion exchangers are obtained. 3 to 5 amino hydrogen atoms per epoxy group yield resins which can be further reacted with polyepoxides, e.g. divinylbenzene dioxide or diglycidyl ether of bis-phenol. Less than 0,2 amino hydrogen atoms per epoxy group yield liquid resins which can be hardened by polymerization with active hydrogen compounds such as polyamines, polyhydric phenols, polycarboxylic acids or their anhydrides. More than 5 amino hydrogen atoms per epoxy group yield viscous or tacky products. Catalysts may be added to the compositions, e.g. metal halide Lewis acids, alcohols, phenols and alkali metal hydroxides. These may be added in solvents. The compositions may include fillers and pigments, e.g. talc, wood flour, alphacellulose, titanium dioxide, antimony oxide, zinc oxide and carbon black. The hardeners used in the examples include: addition product of diethylene triamine and the diglycidyl ether of bis-phenol; 1, 6-hexanediamine; p-phenylene diamine; diethylene triamine; p, p1-methylene dianiline; ethylene diamine; xylylene diamine; aniline; and, for comparative purposes, dibutylamine. Uses. Casting or moulding into buttons, combs, toys, structural parts, etc. Conduits, electrical insulation, tools, dies, moulds, laminates, adhesives and coatings, all capable of withstanding high temperatures.
