Abstract

877,997. Shearing. BALDWIN-LIMA HAMILTON CORPORATION. Nov. 12, 1959 [Dec. 4, 1958], No. 38365/59. Class 83 (4). In a shear for angles &c. 180 wherein at least one of a set of knives 34, 64 is reciprocated by means 14, 16 on a frame 10, the knives are on a sub-press mechanism which may be withdrawn transversely of the path of reciprocation. A slide 20 in the frame is driven hydraulically or by means of the crank and connecting rod 14, 16. The knife-set is supported in a carriage 30 which may be withdrawn along rails 80, 81 as described below and replaced by another 31, Fig. 4, having different knives. Location of the carriage 30 in the frame is by wedges and pins 122, 124, Fig. 7, on the frame engaging wings 118 on the carriage. The upper knife 34 for severing three angles 180 is on a slide 36 in vertical guides 38 in carriage 30, being biased upwardly as by a fluidpressure unit 40, 45 at each of the four corners of slide 36. The cylinder of each unit or (as shown) the piston rod moves relatively to the slide 36, bearing on replaceable seatings 48 on the carriage 30. The lower knife may be fixed or mounted on a slide 66 in guides 68 in the carriage to compensate for different sizes of work. Adjustment is by contact with a slide 130, Fig. 3, in the frame 10 operated by a wedge 140 movable by a cylinder 148 against a stop-screw 150 which is adjustable by a worm 154. Extensions 187 of the upper slide 36 engage slideways 186 on slide 66. Strippers 60 retained in the slide 36 by nuts 63 are biased towards the work by springs 61. A depressible table receives the severed stock, and inclined plates 76 deflect falling metal. Operation.-To change the knife-set, the supply line 52, Fig. 4, for cylinders 40 is disconnected from an accumulator 58 and connected to an inoperative pump 178 having a valve 177 which is opened to allow the upper knife-slide 36 to move a short distance away from slide 20. Slide 130 also is lowered to clear the bottom of the carriage 30, which is then drawn along rails 80, 81 by a screw 100 driven by an electric motor and gear-box 96, 98 having a brake 99. A nut 102 on the screw has a pin 104 engaging an opening 112 in the carriage, which has ears 198 to facilitate removal of the carriage by a crane. The auxiliary pump may move the upper knife of the dismounted carriage to permit alignment; alternatively. a single source of pressure may replace the accumulator and pump units 58, 178. Check valves 194 in the connections prevent release of fluid during disconnection. A bleedvalve may be provided on the slide 36 to lower the blade without the auxiliary connection 172.
