877,908. Printing processes. AMERICAN CAN CO. Feb. 17, 1960 [May 21, 1959], No. 5637/60. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XL(a) ] The surface of thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene, tubing or tubular containers is rendered receptive to coating or printing by subjection to an electric corona discharge, the voltage being applied between a conductive rotating mandrel 15, Fig. 4, on which the tube or container T is fitted and an elongated electrode 33. The corona treating step may take place at one station of a rotating turret printing machine for applying various finishing operations to the tube or container. The corona electrode 33 is adjustably mounted in screw sockets 39 for varying the air gap. The electrode 33 may also be made up of slidable parts to accommodate tubes of different lengths. The end of the electrode 33 may be upturned to treat the breast portion of the tube T or a separate corona discharge may be applied to this portion. Arrangements may be made for subjecting the inner surface of the tube also to a corona discharge. In Fig. 5 the mandrel 59 is provided with one or more enlarged collars 61, 65 to space the tube T from the major portion of the mandrel. The outer surfaces of the collars 61, 65 are pitted by knurling or grooving to provide air gaps at these regions with a minimum area of contact with the tube.
