Abstract

877,871. Coating heels with sheets. VIK SUPPLIES Ltd. May 16, 1960 [Sept. 19, 1959], No. 31970/59. Class 93. A heel is covered by coating a sheet of thermoplastic material or the heel or both with an adhesive, clamping the sheet into the frame of a vacuum-forming machine, softening the sheet by heat, forming the sheet into a bubble by the application of pressure to one side or vaccum to the other side, inserting the heel into the bubble, and applying reduced pressure to exhaust the bubble to cause it to conform to the shape of the heel and become united thereto. The heels may be of wood, wood and metal, polystyrene, or polyamide. The shaped part of the breast of the heel may be cut or drilled to facilitate contact. The sheet may be of polyvinyl chloride, preferably containing less than 10% of plasticizer, polystyrene, polyvinylidene chloride, or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. The adhesive may be an aqueous emulsion of polychloroprene, butadiene - acrylonitrile or butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyvinyl acetate,. or polymers or interpolymers of acrylic ester, which may contain an inorganic filler, a stabilizer, or an emulsion of coumarone-indene resin, of an ester of wood or gum rosin or hydrogenated rosin, or of a phenol-formaldehyde resin (including e.g. a xylenol-formaldehyde resin), or may be an organic solvent solution of polychloroprene, or butadieneacrylonitrile or butadiene-styrene copolymer, which may contain an inorganic filler, sulphur, a polyisocyanate, chlorinated rubber, a vinyl chloride-vinylacetate copolymer, an unmodified or hydrogenated ester of wood or gum rosin, a phenol-formaldehyde resin (including e,g. a xylenol - formaldehyde resin), or a rosinmodified phenol - formaldehyde resin. The covered heel may be cooled by blowing cold air thereon, and excess sheeting is cut off and the edges folded over manually. A single sheet may be clamped into the frame of a vacuumforming machine between two lattices of bars, each area of sheet being sufficient to coat one heel, and the appropriate number of heels are mounted on a tray.
