877,683. Universal joints. ALLPATENT A.G. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 13, 1959], No. 1237/60. Class 80 (2). A flexible coupling comprises concentric helical springs 20-23 between collars 24, 25 fast with driving and driven shafts 26, 27, the springs being closely wound and alternately of opposite hand. The springs fit in grooves 24b, 25b in the collars and are secured as by solder or adhesive to the bottom of the grooves. The springs are formed from wire of substantially rectangular or approximately square section, but the side forming the outside of the spring may be slightly convex. In the embodiment of Fig. 10, driving and driven shafts 56, 57 are coupled by two spring assemblies 51a-53a and 51-53 extending between coupling members 54, 55 on the shafts and an intermediate member 58, a bond 59 being formed between the spring assemblies. Members 54, 55, 58 have extensions 54a, 55a, 58a, 58b which are solids of revolution, the generators of which correspond to the maximum design curvature of the inner surface of the innermost spring, and support this spring when the coupling is fully deflected. In a modification having one spring assembly between driving and driven shafts, funnel-shaped sleeves embrace the ends of the spring assembly and the inside surface of the funnel corresponds to the curvature of the external surface of the outside spring when the latter is fully deflected.
