Abstract

A sintered addition agent suitable for the electric-furnace production of chromium-containing steels or ferro-alloys consisting of oxides and carbides of iron and chromium and free carbon, has a composition such that 15 to 40% is combined chromium, (of which 15 to 80% is acid soluble and the remainder acid insoluble), from 12 to 60% is combined iron (of which at least 85% is acid soluble and the remainder acid insoluble), sufficient free carbon so that the total carbon is at least 5% in excess over that necessary to give a 1 to 1 gram-atom ratio of carbon to oxygen in the agglomerate, the remainder being the carbon and oxygen combined with the iron and chromium therein and incidental impurities. The addition agent may be prepared from a comminuted mixture of chrome ore, iron ore and carbon in suitable proportions heated in an inert atmosphere at 1000 DEG C. to 1300 DEG C., the iron and chromium oxides being partially-reduced to the carbides in the solid state, and the product cooled, if desired. The comminuted mixture may be mixed with a non-interfering binder and pelletized prior to heating.
