Abstract

<PICT:0876827/III/1> A seamless coating of photosensitive solution is applied to a printing cylinder by introducing it into, and withdrawing it from, a bath of the solution, and blowing a forced draught of filtered air against the surface of the cylinder above the liquid surface during these operations. As shown, a cylinder 11 to be coated, is mounted on a plunger-like tank bottom 3, and is lowered into the jacketted tank 1. The space 14 between the cylinder and the tank wall is kept filled with the photosensitive solution which is supplied from a vertically-movable vessel 8 to an encircling channel 4, from whence it flows into the said space. The connection between the channel 4 and the vessel 8 is then broken at 17, and the vessel lowered; the cylinder 11 is raised, and the overflowing solution returned to the vessel 8 through a filter 18. A protective shield of filtered air is provided above the surface of the liquid in the tank 1 by supplying the air from a pump 20, or a supply tank, to a feed space 9 around the top of the tank whence it is directed through slits or jets 10, towards the cylinder 11. The jets may be directed radially inward, or along a tangent or chord of the tank, and may be provided with closure means. A transparent cover 19 is provided.
