Abstract

876,605. Slicing hard materials. PHILCO CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 34715/57. Classes 60 and 124. Apparatus for slicing germanium, silicon, quartz, glass and the like comprises a wire having an abrasive surface, means for moving the wire longitudinally over a workpiece and means for turning the wire about its longitudinal axis operating in relation to the longitudinal movement. The workpiece 11, is mounted on a ceramic base 44 horizontally slidable on a support 45. A slice is cut from the workpiece by a wire 10 comprising a metallic core filament, e.g. of high tensile strength drawn tungsten to which is bonded a fine-grit diamond-bearing coating. The wire is held by chucks 12, 13 at opposite ends of a frame 14 reciprocated in a frame 20 by a motor 32 and crank 33. The frame 20 is pivoted at 36, its pivotal movement being controlled by a screw mechanism 38, 39 actuated by a motor 40 through worm gearing 41, 42. Each chuck comprises a collar 15 rotatable in and extending through a bearing 16 in the frame 14 and carrying a wheel 17 with spokes 18 co-operating with a deflector 19 on the frame 20 so that the last part of each stroke of the saw causes one of the spokes 18 to ride up an inclined front surface of the deflector 19 resulting in a partical rotation of the chuck 15. Thus the opposite ends of the wire 10 are alternately uniformly twisted by small angles resulting in gradual complete bodily rotation of the wire. The deflector 19 is pivoted at 24 and has an associated stop member 25. Coolant is supplied to the working area of the wire 10 through a nozzle 46, waste coolant being collected in a pan.
