876,577. Electrophotographic processes and apparatus. KOLB, O. K. (Haloid Co.). Dec. 10, 1957, No. 38344/57. Class 98(2) [Also in Group XVI] A photo-conductive layer is given a uniform layer of charged developer particles and is exposed through its base to a pattern of radiation while the developer layer is contacted with a receiving surface, whereby developer particles are transferred to the receiving surface in the exposed areas. In Fig. 2, a transparent cylinder is half-coated with a photoconductive layer 31 which is given a uniform dusting of developer powder from a brush 62, and the powder is given a uniform charge by electrode 55. As the layer 31 passes through the exposure station 44, the original 42 to be copied is fed beneath lamps 33 and an image is projected through the base of the photoconductive layer by the optical system 39, 40, 41. At the same time, developer powder is transferred in the exposed areas to a receiving web 47, the transferred image being fixed at 64. Any residual charges on the layer 31 are removed by an electrode 57 of opposite polarity to electrode 55, and by a uniform exposure to lamp 58. The apparatus shown in Fig. 3 is similar, except that the photoconductive layer 71 is in the form of a tape which is unwound from a roll 73, dusted with developer powder by a brush 81, charged at 55 and passed to the exposure station beneath the receiving tape 75. Fixing is in a solvent chamber 79 containing a volatile solvent-impregnated absorbent filler 80. Specification 672,767 is referred to.
