Abstract

The invention comprises amines of the general formula <FORM:0876465/IV (b)/1> and acid addition salts thereof wherein R is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1-3 carbon atoms and R1 is a straight or branched alkyl radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms which may be substituted by hydroxyl radicals and/or phenyl radicals, together with the preparation thereof by reductive methylation of amines of the formula RCH2C(CH3)2NHR1. The compounds may also be prepared by alkylation of RCH2C(CH3)2NHCH3 with a reactive ester of R1OH or formation of the acyl or thioacyl derivative followed by reduction or methylation of RCH2C(CH3)2NHCH3 with a reactive methanol ester or formation of the formyl derivative followed by reduction. N.-t-Butylisopropylamine, N-tertbutylethylamine, and N-t-butyl-2-amino-pentane are prepared by reacting t-butyl-amine with isopropyl iodide, ethyl iodide or sec-amyl bromide. N-t-Butyl-2-aminopropanol is prepared by reacting a -bromopropionic acid ethyl ester with t-butylamine and reducing the a -(N-t-butylamine)-propionic acid ethyl ester so produced.
