Abstract

A coated non-absorbable surgical suture comprises a plurality of silk filaments and a coating on the exposed surfaces of the filaments of a moisture-resistant, organo-silicon polymer. A silk suture is immersed in a solution of an alkyl polysiloxane, a partially polymerized silicone resin such as sold as "DC803," "DC804," or a silicone rubber, or is treated with a volatile silicon polymer, e.g. an alkyl halogeno silane such as dimethyl dichloro silane or an alkyl polysiloxane, in the gaseous state. The coated suture is heated to cure the resin and sterilized. When alkyl halogeno silanes are used, ammonia fumes may be introduced to ensure removal of halide to silicon linkages.
