[Also in Group II] The purification of liquids by solvent extraction in countercurrent flow is effected in an unbaffled vertical column 1 having inlets 4, 6 and outlets 3, 7, a vertical, centrally located, movable shaft 8 able to reciprocate in a vertical direction, a plurality of horizontal open network agitating discs 9 mounted on the shaft, each of the discs extending over substantially the entire interior cross-section of the column short of contact with the interior wall of the column and containing large openings together comprising 50% to 65% of the cross-sectional area of the disc, and a reciprocating drive mechanism 2 for the shaft. Each disc may be in the form of expanded metal latticework or a spoked wheel-like plate. When two immiscible solvents of different density are to be mixed with a solution undergoing extraction, the heavier and lighter solvents enter and leave the column by inlets and outlets 4 and 7, and 6 and 3, respectively, the solution being introduced at an additional inlet 5. When a solution is to be mixed with one solvent only, inlet 5 is not used.
