Abstract

A water-soluble phenolic formaldehyde resin is prepared by reacting ordinary phenol with formaldehyde in a mol ratio varying, respectively, between 1 : 1 and 1 : 3, preferably between 1 : 1,2 and 1 : 2,5, in the presence of a catalyst such as an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, e.g. sodium hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, methyl, ethyl, triethyl or propyl amine. A water-insoluble phenolic formaldehyde resin is prepared by reacting ordinary phenol, o-, p- or, preferably, m-cresol or a xylenol such as 2, 3- or 3, 4- or 3, 5- or 2, 6- or 2, 4- or 2, 5-dimethyl phenol with formaldehyde, in the presence of ammonia. A mixture of a cresol with a xylenol or with aniline may be reacted with formaldehyde to give the water-insoluble resin. The water-insoluble resin may be modified with tung, linseed, soya or castor oil and may be plasticized with dioctyl, diheptyl, dihexyl, diamyl or dibutyl phthalate. 5%-22% by weight of the water-soluble resin is combined with 95%-78% of the water-insoluble resin and dissolved in a mutual solvent.
