Abstract

A heat treatable alloy which may be either wrought or cast contains: .Mg at least 88% by weight. .Rare earths (including Y). ..0.5-3.5% .Ag.1.5-3.5 .Zr.0-1.0 .Mn.0-2.0 .Zn.0-0.5 .Cd.0-1.0 .Li.0-6.0 .Ca.0-0.8 .Ga.0-2.0 .In.0-2.0 .Tl.0-5.0 .Pb.0-1.0 .Bi.0-1.0 .Th.0-5.0 .Cu impurities.0-0.25 .Fe.0-0.05 the amount of Ag and rare earth metals together being not less than 2.0% and the quantity of Zr and Mn together being not less than 0.4%. The rare earth metals contain La and Ce together if any less than 25%. Heat treatment consists of solution treatment for not less than half an hour in the range from the solidus to 100 DEG C. below it, followed by precipitation at 150-250 DEG C. for 1-16 hours or more. Alloys in which the rare earth metals consist of mischmetall, containing about 50% of cerium, are described for purposes of comparison only. Specification 759,411 is referred to.
