Abstract
875,915. Stapling machines. CRABTREE & SONS Ltd., R. W. Dec. 3, 1957 [Sept. 20, 1956], No. 28821/56. Class 89(3) [Also in Group XXII] In the wire feeding mechanism of a stapling machine applicable to printing machines, the cutting of the wire for any reason, such as a choke in the wire guide, is facilitated by providing in the wire feeding mechanism a spring operated wire cutter which is held against operation by a releasable catch operable manually, or automatically in response to the condition of the wire, to free the cutter to cut the wire. In the embodiment described the wire feeding mechanism is duplicated, and the feed path of each wire includes a wire feed passage 3, Fig. 5, in a bracket 2. A cylindrical wire cutter component 1 is mounted to turn in a bore extending transversely across each wire feed passage 3, and each cutter 1 is connected to a lever 5 which is biased by a spring 6 into the position shown in Fig. 5. Each lever 5 is swingable against the bias of the spring 6 into a position, shown in Fig. 2, wherein a recess 4 in the cutter 1 is aligned with the wire feed passage 3 so that the wire passing from the passage 3 lies on the base of the recess 4. Each wire feed path is associated with a separate control plate 8 mounted on a hollow slide 9<SP>1</SP> slidable in the bracket 2 and providing a wire feed passage 3<SP>1</SP> in alignment with the passage 3, the slide 9<SP>1</SP> being spring biased in a direction away from the bracket 2. In the position shown in Fig. 2, a shaped portion on the outer end of the lever is interlocked with a flange, (Fig. 4, not shown) on the corresponding plate 8. In operation, by manually pressing the plate 8 towards the bracket 2, the lever 5 is released to allow the cutter 1 to rotate under influence of the spring 6 to cut the wire between itself and the edge of the passage 3. The feed passage 3<SP>1</SP> in the slide 9<SP>1</SP> is just large enough to allow passage of the wire but is not large enough to allow passage of a local thickening at a join in the wire, which thus operates the slide 9<SP>1</SP> and causes release of the lever 5 to operate the cutter. Each wire feed path also includes a cylindrical wire clamping component 17 having a wire receiving opening 18. The component 17 carries an operating disc 19 having a notch 20 which is engaged by a tooth 21 on a disc 22 fast with the cutter component 1. Upon release of the lever 5, the tooth 21 turns the clamping component 17 just before the wire is cut. The cut end of the wire is thus bent by the edge of the opening 18. The duplicated wire feed mechanism described may be combined with the wire feed mechanism of Specification 743,068.
