Abstract

875,787. Cables. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 17, 1959 [July 8, 1958], No. 21807/58. Class 109. [Also in Group XXVIII] A cable for lifting and operating a gas-operated grab comprises two flexible tubes with a lifting wire between them, located in a flexible sheath. Tubes 3a, 3b of stainless steel and a lifting wire 2 are arranged within a sheath 4 of stainless steel braiding, the space between the wire 2 and the sheath 4 being filled with wire filling 5, Fig. 2, and stainless steel clips 6 tack-welded to the sheath 4 to fix the braiding and to count the length of cable paid out. The tube 3b contains electrical leads to connect with an indicating circuit or thermocouple, and gas is passed down both tubes 3a, 3b, that in 3a being used to operate gas bellows in the grab. In the modification of Fig. 4, steel beads 25 replace the filling 5, and the sheath 4 may be tack-welded to these as at 26, thus dispensing with the clips 6. For low temperature working, rubber or plastic packing may replace the filling 5 or beads 25. Specification 780,339 is referred to.
