Abstract

One or more antibiotics of the ostreogrycin group are solubilized by admixture with a physiologically acceptable water-soluble amide such as urea, nicotinamide or acetamide. Optional additions are (a) a physiologically acceptable water-miscible organic solvent for the antibiotic e.g. ethanol, propylene glycol, dimethylformamide or dimethylacetamide (b) alkali e.g. NaOH or Na2CO3. The antibiotics are ostreogrycin (antibiotic E129), ostreogrycin Factors A, B, Z and Z1, Z2 and Z3, antibiotic PA 114 A (identical with Factor A), antibiotic PA 114 B (identical with Factor Z), streptogramin and staphylomycin. The compositions are used pharmaceutically (see Group VI). Specifications 776,035, 793,797, 799,053, 819,872, 820,658 and 875,701 are referred to.ALSO:An antibiotic composition for oral or parenteral administration comprises one or more antibiotics of the astreogrycin group solubilized by admixture with a physiologically acceptable water-soluble amide such as urea, nicotinamide or acetamide. Optional additions are (a) a physiologically acceptable water-miscible organic solvent for the antibiotic, e.g. ethanol, propylene glycol, dimethylformamide and dimethylacetamide; (b) alkali such as NaOH and Na2CO3. Sweetening and flavouring agents may be added to oral preparations. The preparations may be dry mixtures adapted to be dissolved in pyrogen free water for injection. The antibiotics are ostreogrycin (antibiotic E129), ostreogrycin Factors A, B, Z, Z1, Z2 and Z3, antibiotic PA114A (identical with Factor A), antibiotic PA114B (identical with Factor Z), streptogramin and staphylomycin.
